Factors To Look Into When Planning Your Koi Fish Ponds
Koi fish ponds are great at home. A garden pond greatly adds to the beauty of your yard. A Koi pond will also give you pleasure and even some relaxation after a difficult or a busy day. However, the cost of building above ground Koi fish ponds can be high. And when you have a Koi pond you have to make sure that you are providing a good dwelling place for your Koi fishes always. So, you have to make sure that you will be able to maintain your garden pond as well.
Appropriate Size and Depth
When considering building a Koi pond, it is important to consider the Koi fishes first. Take note that Koi fishes grow big so they need bigger and deeper Koi fish ponds. You need a garden pond that is at least three feet deep if you want to have Koi fishes in it. So, if you cannot provide a habitat this deep, you might as well consider smaller fishes instead.
It is important for Koi fish ponds to be deep so the Koi fishes will have enough room to swim about. A deeper garden pond will also protect them from winter and summer. When the Koi pond freezes during winter a deeper area will give them more room to look for relatively high temperature water. During summer, the Koi fishes will be able to swim deeper to find a colder place to swim and live in.
In addition to that, the depth of Koi fish ponds is very important to protect the Koi fishes from predators. Household cats could be attracted to beautiful Koi ponds filled with colorful fishes, for instance. Birds and raccoons could also come over to the garden pond. That is why you need to protect them. Having deeper water would allow the Koi fishes to swim deeper so the said predators will not be able to reach and harm them.
Proper Filtration
Aside from sufficient area and sufficient water, Koi fish ponds also need clean and safe water for your Koi fishes. That is why you need proper filtration for your garden pond. A Koi pond filtration system will help maintain the chemical balance in it. The water will not become stagnant so there will be no mosquitoes and algae on it. You will also be able to avoid stress in your Koi fishes. However, a filtration system usually runs on electricity so you should also make sure it is both efficient and energy saving.

ne other way to protect the fishes in your Koi pond is by putting a scarecrow. This will help drive away predators from Koi fish ponds. You could also place a light-weight mesh covering on the garden pond. But this should be removable so you can still do your maintenance on your Koi pond easily and conveniently. For the baby fishes, you could also put some rocks for them to hide in. If you put some aquatic plants, their habitat will even be more complete. You Koi pond would also be more beautiful.
Again, having Koi fish ponds demands time and money. But when your garden pond gives you joy and peace in life, having a Koi pond would surely be very worth it.
